I feel a little guilty saying this but I am cheating on my Kindle. actually, to be clearer, I've replaced it.. with a Nook. I loved my Kindle... really I did. When I traveled and debated which gadget to take, Kindle was always front of the line, even before my between my Ipod (too limited), Ipad (too showy and large), Blackberry (work issued, redundant to my iphone). But as more and more ereaders came out, I began to notice Kindle's limitations. Sure it's e-ink screen lasts a long time but it is drab to read. I like to read newspapers on it but photos appear in a dull monochrome (16 shades of gray). Navigating to the bookstore is slow and klunky - it reminded me of when I used to log to the internet with a dial up modem. You'd click and then wait for the page to refresh. And while I understand that the Kindle is a dedicated e-reader, things that it still should do since it has a wireless and 3G connection (like browse the internet) it just does poorly.
Enter the Nook. On a whim I downloaded the reader on my Ipad and also downloaded a newspaper (you can't do this on Kindle... back in October 2010 they said it was coming but not yet.) Anyway, as soon as I saw the newspaper in color on my Ipad, I was sold. I also downloaded US Magazine. Clear and colorful!
True I could do this on the Ipad using Zinio and other apps but the Ipad is so large I hesitate to bring it out when I am on a commuter plane. Plus it is a bit showy and ostentatious. When I use it in public I feel like one of those poseurs sitting in a coffee shop pecking away on their Mac. the Nook is half the size of the Ipad and is easier to use for a quick hour long flight. (I also would not take my Ipad on the metro... it would be an invitation for a mugging. Don't get me wrong, I do love my Ipad A LOT! It is my most used gadget for sure... but that's for another post.) THis one is about my Nook.
I love it! Slim and sexy and bright and colorful. true it is not perfect. Navigation is a little unintuitive and sometimes I touch the screen by accident but the display is gorgeous and performance is zippy and I can do things like play Pandora and watch videos on it. Very cool!
So Mr Kindle.. I am afraid your days are numbered! You had a god run but you've been replaced by someone better... oh well, whatya gonna do?
